This poster maps each Progress in Computing module to 5 core learning objectives; these objectives are designed to cover the entirety of the KS3 National Curriculum, in addition to developing digital literacy skills and preparing them for the range of KS4 computing options.

Progress in Computing & Assessment

To maximise student achievement and help you to track students’ progress through the course, Progress in Computing is designed around five core learning objectives. These have been developed to ensure progress from the end of Key Stage 2 through the entirety of the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum, in addition to developing students’ digital literacy skills and preparing them for the range of computing options on offer at Key Stage 4. 

These learning objectives provide the framework for the Progress in Computing progression pathway. The structure of each module is also based on the core learning objectives, with all content and activities supporting the development of the relevant knowledge and skills, and all assessment opportunities enabling you to track and measure progress throughout the course.

The course is designed to be taught over three years, although you can deliver the 16 modules in an order of your choosing, depending on the time available in your classrooms, what works best for your students and the Key Stage 4 options that you are progressing towards.

The course provides complete coverage of the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum is broken down into 16 modules and three end-of-course project:

Module 1: Getting Started 
Module 2: Introducing spreadsheets
Module 3: Computing: past, present and future
Module 4: Programming in Scratch
Module 5: Computing components
Module 6: Programming in Python: sequence
Module 7: Advanced spreadsheets
Module 8: Algorithms
Module 9: Programming in Python: selection
Module 10: Internet safety, cyber security & encryption
Module 11: Binary and computer logic
Module 12: Sound and video editing
Module 13: Designing websites
Module 14: Networking and the internet
Module 15: Programming in Python: iteration
Module 16: The ethics of computing

Lorne Pearcey (series editor) is an experienced teacher and author, most recently of Hodder Education’s GCSE Computer Science textbooks.

Ben Barnes is a current Computing teacher and the former Director of Computer Science across the Outwood Academy chain of schools. 

Mark Clarkson is a highly experienced Head of Computing at Egglescliffe School who has worked on various Computing projects with Computing at Schools (CAS), BBC and Red C. 

Graham Hastings is a best-selling author and a Head of Computing with over 20 years experience. He has worked closely with Computing at School, as a Master Teacher specialising in the the provision of resources and CPD for the teaching of computing to children in the transition years from upper primary to lower secondary.

Tristan Kirkpatrick is a current Computing teacher and is a Director of Computer Science cross the entire Outwood Academy chain of schools. He gained ‘Certified Innovator’ status from Google, involving a project to transform learning for students.
