Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1 the focus is on the building blocks of mental wellbeing: identifying, expressing and managing a core set of feelings and gaining a solid grounding in key wellbeing concepts, introducing practical ways to support themselves and building good relationships with others. The key areas of coverage are:

  • Emotions

  • Mental wellbeing

  • Relationships with others

  • Change and loss

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2 pupils continue to develop their ability to identify and express a growing range of and develop a deeper understanding of the complexity of feelings in ourselves and others. There is also development of understanding around mental health, including the impact of stress, low mood, bereavement and the importance of recognising and getting support when needed. The key areas of coverage are:

  • Emotions

  • Mental health and wellbeing 

  • Building resilience and learning from mistakes 

  • Relationships with others

  • Bullying 

  • Change and loss

  • Mental ill health (upper KS2 only)
