Introducing Shine Interventions, Targeted Interventions for Ages 11+

Providing the right interventions to a learner and tackling their strands can be challenging, even for the most seasoned teachers or support teams.

Which is why Hodder Education is delighted to announce that we are releasing new Shine Interventions subscriptions to provide targeted interventions for ages 10-16. Using results from either your Access Reading Tests or Access Mathematics Tests, you can use data-informed, out-the-box interventions and provide the right support to the learner. With Shine Interventions, you can create individualised learning experiences and work on a 1:1 basis or with groups.

What is Shine Interventions?

It is an online, learning resource that uses your assessment data to target your interventions and close a learner’s identified learning gaps. The resource includes access to bespoke teacher presentations, learning activities, worksheets and interactive quizzes that support your teaching efforts. As they’re informed by test result data, you can quickly and confidently deliver the right support.

Shine Interventions for 10-16-year-olds includes two subscriptions, one for Mathematics and one for Reading.

Our standardised assessments, Access Reading Tests and Access Mathematics Tests inform Shine Interventions.

If you opt for the Reading subscription, the 72 interventions target the following three areas: Retrieval, Inference and Vocabulary.

If you opt for a Mathematics subscription, you get access to 58 interventions that focus on all key areas of Mathematics including place value, fractions and ratios to geometry, measures and statistics.

Our educational experts have made sure that you don’t need in-depth subject knowledge to deliver the interventions and that every step is clearly outlined and linked back to pedagogy. Your team members can learn how to use Shine Interventions swiftly and are empowered to help learners who need support.

Improve learning outcomes

The resources deliberately use a scaffolding approach to delivering the targeted interventions. The interventions start with the root cause of misunderstanding and build up from there. For example, if a learner needs to improve their understanding of fractions, it’s likely they’ll need support with ratio or probability. The interventions take it a step at a time, building up the learner and increasing their confidence in particular strands. We only move onto the next step in the intervention once they feel confident to move on. This increases confidence and closes the learning gaps.

What’s more the progress quizzes have their own separate progress reports, enabling you to see how a learner is progressing as they complete their interventions and grasp new concepts.

Who is Shine Interventions for?

Shine Interventions is a flexible resource that can be used on ages 11-14 during mainstream education and on ages 10-16 for potential SEN learners.

A learner’s Access Reading Tests or Access Mathematics Tests results inform Shine Interventions to create a bespoke learning experience. This better supports the learner and the team member delivering the interventions.

How does Shine Interventions work?

1. You administer either Access Reading Tests or Access Mathematics Tests or both.

2. You input their results into Boost Insights. If you use the online, interactive tests, your marks are entered automatically.

3. Boost Insights analyses their results and identifies learners who may require targeted interventions. Follow the links on each relevant strand to Shine Interventions. For example, if learners have scored low on Retrieval or Ratios, click on that strand and access interventions specific to that strand.

4. Carry out the interventions. You can access your resources online, including printable worksheets, and support your learners. If someone is delivering the intervention with little subject knowledge, the teaching resources include explainers and supportive documents, helping them deliver the intervention with confidence.

5. Take a progress quiz. Once you’ve delivered an intervention, the learner can take a progress quiz to see how far they have come and the areas they have improved in. The progress quiz reports will help you track how they are improving over time.

6. Retake Access Reading Tests or Access Mathematics Test by administering Test B. Once the period of intervention is complete, retake the parallel tests and track how much progress has been made. Repeat Steps 2-4 if necessary.
