I am thrilled to share my experience as the author of the IB Environmental Systems and Societies textbook designed for the new curriculum. My journey as a curriculum reviewer for IBDP ESS began in 2020 with a profound passion for the environment and education. Witnessing the growing importance of environmental awareness inspired me to contribute to a curriculum that shapes future global citizens.
Collaborating with a diverse team of educators and researchers was the highlight of this achievement. Educators from around the world discussed the importance of offering ESS at the Higher Level and planned a detailed course that justified the cause. We engaged in rigorous discussions, shared innovative ideas, and conducted thorough research to ensure the curriculum meets the highest standards.
Authoring the textbook for the IB through Hodder Education was a very enriching and fulfilling experience for me. We collaborated online and carefully designed the structure of the textbook, paying minute attention to creating a balance between content and engagement opportunities for the students. This collaborative effort enriched the syllabus with diverse perspectives and cutting-edge knowledge.
The new syllabus introduces ESS at the Higher Level for the first time. Concepts have always been at the core of ESS. The new syllabus integrates the three main concepts — Perspectives, Systems, and Sustainability — into the topics of environmental importance. Each topic presents opportunities to explore these concepts, which are explicitly mentioned in the textbook. Readers will be able to think critically and apply their knowledge in various contexts. The concepts allow the different topics included in the syllabus to be explored in a more interconnected manner, which is the essence of ESS. The manifestation of the cause-and-effect relationship can be better understood at the local and global levels with the help of these concepts.
The HL lens provides a deeper understanding of topics as students view various environmental issues through the lens of environmental law, environmental economics, and environmental ethics. This textbook aims to make learning more engaging and relevant for students with hands-on activities, an emphasis on critical thinking, and real-world examples. For teachers, it provides comprehensive resources and flexible teaching strategies, allowing for more personalized and effective instruction.
I am confident that this new curriculum will inspire and empower both students and teachers, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our environment.
