Black Tudors

Black Tudors has become a phenomenon in the History teaching community since its publication in 2017. We have worked closely with author Miranda Kaufmann, the University of Oxford’s Jason Todd and a team of teachers from across the UK to produce five different enquiries that incorporate Miranda’s scholarship.

Meet the Authors!

Dr. Miranda Kaufmann is the author of the Wolfson History Prize and Nayef Al-Rodhan Prize shortlisted book Black Tudors: The Untold Story (2017). She read History at Christ Church, Oxford and is now an Honorary Fellow of the University of Liverpool, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and of the Royal Society of Arts, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London, where she co-convenes the 'What's Happening in Black British History?' workshop series. She is currently working on her second book, Heiresses: The Caribbean Marriage Trade, taking her work into schools with her Teaching Black Tudors project and to the world with her new Black Tudors: The Untold Story course with FutureLearn. www.mirandakaufmann.com

Jason Todd is subject lead for the History PGCE programme at the University of Oxford Department of Education. He obtained his first degree in Cultural Studies from University of East London, followed by a MA in History Education from the Institute of Education. He completed a PGCE in Social Studies at Goldsmiths in 1992. He has worked in a variety of London Schools, including middle management and a senior management role in a Special Needs school. In 1999 he was awarded AST status with specialism in History Education and Inclusion. Since joining the Department of Education in 2010 he has undertaken work related to inclusion and diversity, In 2019 he co-authored the TIDE-Runnymede report 'Teaching Migration, Belonging and Empire in Secondary schools'. His current projects include TRACTION 'Teaching Race, Belonging, Empire and Migration', a pioneering platform of training, resources, and community network that this year won the vice chancellors Innovation & Engagement Award. He has just begun a 3-year research project that will illuminate our understanding of how the histories of empire, migration and belonging are encountered by young people in England and how teachers approach these topics in their classrooms.
