  • Simple to use and provides a range of information about specific learners. It's particularly useful for setting targets for learners with SEN. We identify three areas as a focus and include these in planning. Learners have shown progress across every half term using this small-steps approach. We can demonstrate this progress, even though learners aren't moving through their current year groups expected levels.

  • We use Salford Sentence Reading and Comprehension Test twice a year to identify the reading ages of our learners. We then put specific interventions in place for learners who are reading below their chronological age. We do this for learners of all ages. The test allows you to track the progress the learners are making. It is simple to use and all learners can access it. It identifies specific areas where the learners need more support and which areas they are doing well in.

  • I have used this resource previously and find it is instant and reliable. Using this resource has enabled me to overcome the difficulties in discussing reading and comprehension ages with my learners. I can tell them where their strengths and weaknesses are and give suggestions as to where they need to improve. The learners, I feel, appreciate that instant feedback.

SSA in Literacy and Speech & Language, Our Lady & St John Catholic College Blackburn
  • Each learner completes Salford Sentence Reading and Comprehension Test at the start and end of the academic year to measure their reading age. Interventions are then put in place to support those with lower reading ages. These scores are used alongside our other reading assessment measures. I would recommend this resource to other schools as it provides an accurate, year on year measure of reading ability and is a consistent data source to compare to other systems for reading.

  • Having used the resource in the trial we realised it was a powerful tool to look deeper into pupil progress, in addition to all of the material we currently use. The scores are age related which gives us very clear data on progress across the years in school.

Executive Headteacher, Cockshutt and Criftins CE Primary Schools
